ARTIST STATEMENT IN MARCH 2018
I use cultural devices related to race and class
To bring people together
Interested in a sense of tribal communal intimacy
It usually results in a momentarily exchange of conversation with strangers
Often set within a semi ‘public’ space that holds power
I create a gesture rather
Somewhat regarded as ‘community’ work, ‘public’ work and
has a ‘collaborative’ nature.
ARTIST STATEMENT IN FEB 2018
I am inspired by Kendrick Lamar and Dave Chappelle for dealing with race so overtly in their work: as a theme that overarches their ouvre, through their subtle irony in their lyrics and their anecdotal punchlines at least every 5 minutes within a performance. I am inspired because I deal with race too.
I am learning to be more aggressive. I have had the privilege to summon up gatherings and initiate actions where there has always been a racial undertone and some were more overtly aggressive and expressive than others. I wanted to deal with race without pressuring and forcing the public to deal with it, but perhaps that’s just me being apologetic again.
I believe in ways of tribalism. In the words of Erich Fromm, humans come from nature but are erupted; we can never go back but we have a longing to. We long to be one again as we can vaguely remember it, we become destructive when we can’t create, we can’t deal with this ongoing trauma. Dance and music form somewhat of an antidote to this.
I just want ‘us’ to be free. I have been focusing on spaces a lot, where we can come together, or where we have been separated for a long time, and how it impacts our psyche. I have been looking for ways to shift these spaces. It’s the only way where we can cultivate our own culture, free from being reactive, and feel constant freedom. Freedom of movement, free of tokenism, where we can allow ourselves to be diverse, and even show to ourselves we are actual 3 dimensional human beings.
Lately, I have been referring to my work as gestures. It’s about the tone, innit? You can have the best intentions but people can cause more damage if the way things are done in strange, disrespectful ways. What I do is: I notice and create gestures.
I use myself, my body, I am the instigator. I am the one creating the gestures. Sometimes I feel like a hopeless tragic, lately I have been feeling more optimistic for change, sometimes I am a victim of my own work. I am the one wanting to feel free – I am the one wanting to be free from tokenism. I am the one wanting to feel like a 3 dimensional character. I am the one longing for oneness. In the words of the late Donny Hathaway: One day we will all be free.
I am inspired by: ADRIAN PIPER, MARTIN CREED, NAM JUNE PAIK, JOSEPH BEUYS, FRANCIS AlÿS, J DILLA and DAVE CHAPELLE.
